Here we offer some guidance on things to look for when shopping for extract oil.
With so many new CBD extract oil manufacturers popping up, it can feel staggering trying to find the right company and product for you. As you’ve likely heard before, not all extract oil is the same.
We’re here to help you maneuver through the abundance of confusing and contracting information about CBD extract oil, including how it’s connected to essential oils. This guide will give you tips on what to look for and point you in the right direction to high quality and safe products.
What is CBD Extract Oil?
CBD extract oil is a type of essential oil extracted from the stalks and seeds of hemp, the non-intoxicating variety of Cannabis sativa L.
Essential oils like CBD extract oil deliver all the natural compounds in their respective plant source.
That means that CBD extract oil contains the more than 400 chemical compounds naturally found in hemp. Once absorbed by the body, these compounds interact with the body’s native systems to encourage wellbeing and support a balanced diet.
CBD extract oil from Medical Marijuana, Inc., including our award-winning Real Scientific Hemp Oil™ (RSHO™), is sourced from unique varieties of non-GMO hemp that are naturally higher in CBD, or cannabidiol.
Used as a dietary supplement to promote balance and health, our extract oil can be consumed under the tongue, as well as through swallowing, vaping, and topically onto the skin.
When made from hemp, CBD extract oil is federally legal and available to purchase online.
Benefits of CBD Extract Oil
Extract oils have been used for nearly 6,000 years with the aim of naturally supporting a person’s psychological or physical wellbeing.
CBD extract oil encourages balance and optimal functioning by supporting the performance of the body’s endocannabinoid system, or ECS.
Through interactions with cannabinoid receptors, CBD stimulates the ECS and encourages it to keep an array of crucial functions — like immune system response, mood, sleep, and many more — in balance. Thousands of studies have explored the potential benefits of CBD extract oil from cannabis.
How Does CBD Extract Oil Differ From Essential Oils?
An essential oil is any concentrated liquid extracted from the seeds, flowers, stems, roots, leaves, fruits, or other parts of a plant or tree. It retains all the natural compounds, smell and flavor of its respective plant or tree source.
CBD extract oil is considered a type of essential oil. As a quality source of CBD and its balancing properties, CBD extract oil is commonly taken as a supplement to boost balance in the ECS.
In most cases, however, the phrase “essential oil” refers to oil extracted from plants outside of cannabis. These other types of essential oils are not used as supplements because they don’t contain CBD. Rather, they’re commonly used in aromatherapy, or essential oil therapy, a holistic wellness treatment. Aromatherapy works through the sense of smell and skin absorption through products like diffusers and aromatic spritzers. When inhaled, the aromas from essential oils are taken into the lungs.
These other essential oils can also be diluted with a carrier oil such as almond oil, avocado oil, or coconut oil and then infused into other topical products like bathing salts, body oils, and more. When essential oils are applied topically, provided they’re not fake essential oils, some of their chemicals are absorbed through the skin. They are not meant to be swallowed like CBD extract oil.
While much research has been done on CBD extract oil, little is known about the effectiveness of other essential oils. People often use essential oils for their aromatic benefits and as a complementary therapy. However, scientific evidence for these essential oils is considered to be limited.
Here is a list of essential oils commonly used for aromatherapy:
- Clary sage
- Roman chamomile
- Sweet Orange
- Tea Tree
- Ylang Ylang
Like with CBD extract oil, the FDA does not regulate essential oils. Historically, fake essential oils have been an issue, so it is important to always buy your extract oil from a reputable and respected manufacturer with a proven track record.
Oil Extraction Methods
Often times, consumers are curious as to how to extract essential oils. There are multiple removal methods for extracting oil from plants.
Methods an essential oil extractor may use include CO2 extraction, steam distillation, solvent extraction, and cold press extraction.
Supercritical CO2 extraction uses fluid CO2 as a solvent to pull the constituent essential oils, lipids, and other desired material out of the plant material. The fluid CO2 solvent is then removed from the final product by changing its pressure and thus changing its ability to function as a solvent.
Medical Marijuana, Inc. uses a supercritical CO2 process for careful oil extraction from seeds and stalks of our hemp plants. This process in nontoxic and nonflammable, so it offers greater safety and stability than other extraction methods. The supercritical CO2 extraction method also does very little damage to the oil’s compounds, which is why it’s the go-to method in the food industry.
Most other essential oils are extracted through steam distillation. Extraction of essential oils by steam distillation happens when the steam vaporizes the plant material’s compounds. Eventually, the compounds turn into condensation that is collected.
Solvent extraction of essential oils employs food grade solvents like hexane, butane, and ethanol for oil extraction from seeds and plants.
The plant material is first treated with the solvent, producing a waxy aromatic compound called a “concrete.” Once this concrete is mixed with alcohol and exposed to heat, the oil particles are released.
These types of solvent extractions can raise the risk of residual contamination or environmental damage.
Cold Press Extraction
The cold press method of oil extraction, also called expression or scarification, is most commonly used for citrus peels to make products like lemon or sweet orange oils.
The underside of the fruit’s rind is first pierced to open up its essential oil sacs, and then the whole fruit is pressed to squeeze out the oil.
What to Look for When Shopping for Extract Oil
Like with any natural wellness product, it’s important to take extra precaution to ensure you find a manufacturer and product you can trust before you purchase CBD extract oil.
Not all extract oils are created equal, and unfortunately there have been reports of fake essential oils that have been reprimanded by the FDA.
Keeping that in mind, here are some tips on what to look as your shopping for extract oil to make sure you only buy safe, high quality products.
Find a CBD Extract Oil Manufacturer with Longevity
Look for a trusted producer that makes pure extract oils. With essential oils more popular than ever, new manufacturers are regularly entering the market and finding a company with a quality track record can be difficult.
Going with an extract oil manufacturer with a reliable track record and some degree of longevity is key to ensuring you get safe and high quality oils.
Medical Marijuana, Inc. pioneered the growing CBD extract oil industry. We were the first to create an international hemp CBD extract oil pipeline and the first to create quality control processes for hemp oil products. We are also also the first company to have CBD extract oil products accepted by the governments of Brazil, Mexico, Paraguay, and Puerto Rico.
Check Whether the Extract Oil is Tested by a Third Party
Ensure the CBD extract oil you buy is pure and safe by asking the manufacturer to produce testing certificates. Several quantifiable tests exist that allow scientists and producers to be able to test their essential oils to determine quality. Reputable and trustworthy companies will happily provide you with testing results, ideally from an independent, third-party lab.
All CBD extract oil from Medical Marijuana, Inc. undergoes our rigorous Triple Lab Testing™ process. Three separate times throughout manufacturing, our extract oil is examined to ensure it contains an optimal amount of CBD and that it’s free of contaminants like microbes, mold, and heavy metals. With our CBD extract oil products, you can feel comfortable knowing an independent ISO/IEC 170025:2005 accredited lab has checked their quality and safety.
Look for Transparent Product Labels
Every extract oil label should be clearly designed and easily understandable. If buying CBD extract oil, labels should clearly list the amount of CBD a product contains, as well as any additional ingredients.
It could be a red flag if a manufacturer packages their extract oils inside plastic or clear glass, which can allow the oil to degrade from exposure to light. A reputable essential oil manufacturer will package their essential oil in a dark colored glass bottle or other dark container that offers protection from light.
Check How the Plant was Harvested and Produced
Essential oils come from plants, so it’s crucial before buying any that you check to see how the plants were grown. Pesticides and chemical fertilizers can sometimes be used to promote plant growth, but then contaminate the final product.
Medical Marijuana, Inc. works with a collective of 750 family farms in Northern Europe to grow our non-GMO hemp. Our families used centuries-old cultivation practices to grow our hemp without any pesticides, herbicides, chemical fertilizers, or other dangerous chemicals that can contaminate our products.
Be Wary of Medical Claims
A manufacturer making medical claims about their extract oil is a red flag. Be wary if the producer you’re considering makes claims that their essential oils can treat medical conditions or symptoms. Reputable and respectful extract oil companies won’t do this, because doing so is in violation of the FDA’s DSHEA guidelines.
Medical Marijuana, Inc. always complies with FDA regulations. You won’t find us endorsing our CBD extract oil for any specific medical benefit beyond naturally supporting health and wellness.
